Have Your Cake

Among the most photographed parts of a wedding is the cutting of the cake. Who doesn’t love cake? The cake-cutting tradition is one of the first, and sweetest, joint efforts the two of you, as bride and groom, face together. So, whether you decide to gently share a slice or to not-so-gently smash a wedge, your cake should be beautiful and delicious, and it should reflect the special day that belongs to you. Your wedding cake is part of your wedding décor, so it has to be beautiful. The cake is often centered in a place of honor, not tucked away in a back corner where no one will get to “ooh” and “aah” over it or anticipate its deliciousness. A table that is small in diameter and tall is the best way to ensure that even a small, two-tiered cake becomes a showpiece. We’ve seen too many venues using 8-foot round tables as cake tables—that dwarfs even a seven-tiered cake! Be sure to visit different bakeries and view their portfolios. If you find a picture of a cake online or in a magazine that grabs your attention, bring it to the bakery and ask if your cake is going to look similar to the picture. One can usually tell by seeing pictures or examples of the decorator’s work if the quality is going to be comparable. Beauty shouldn’t only be on the surface. Taste is just as important—after all this is what you will be serving your guests. The taste of your wedding cake has to be unforgettable! Bakeries are starting to offer more than the old reliable chocolate, white, and marble cakes, so call and schedule a taste-testing (this is the best part of wedding planning). Be adventurous with flavors, fillings, and icings; you may be surprised what great combinations you fall in love with. Above all, your cake should reflect the personality of the two of you and your special day! Whether you are planning a formal, elegant evening or a casual celebration with family and friends, you and your groom should be represented in this confection. Some brides choose to match small details from their wedding dresses or designs from their invitations. We even created a wedding cake out of rice cereal treats because that was a special treat the bride and groom shared on their first date. Some wedding cakes break from tradition and reflect different activities, trips, or plans that are unique to the bridal couple. When choosing your special dessert—whether a ten-tiered creation, beautiful cupcakes on a tower, or a wide array of other options—be sure to remember these three important factors: beauty in design and execution, delicious flavor and texture, and personality of details. Enjoy your day and be sure to take time and enjoy the sweetness of it all!
